As many of you may already know, after much discussion, the Renegade Knights Firefighter Motorcycle Club (“Renegade Knights Firefighter M.C.”) has decided to change its name. Even though the name is changing, we will remain the same Club with the same goals of fundraising and giving back to the community, rather than paying legal fees to defend the Club’s right to use its name “Renegade Knights Firefighter M.C.”.
You may ask why the Club had to defend its right to use the name “Renegade Knights Firefighter M.C.”? Well, the following explains.
Going back several years the Club’s President and Founder, Rick Chadderton, applied for two federal trademark applications in the United States Patent and Trade Office (USPTO). The first was for the word mark RENEGADE KNIGHTS FIREFIGHTER M.C., and the second was for a colored stylized design mark that includes the word Renegade Knights Firefighter. The club and its members had been proudly using and wearing both of these marks for months
After the USPTO had allowed both of the Club’s applied for marks, the Renegade Knights Firefighter M.C. received notice that another club, the “International Renegade Pigs Motorcycle Club, Inc.” (“Renegade Pigs”), was Opposing the Club’s allowed marks. The Renegade Pigs asserted that the marks RENEGADE KNIGHTS FIREFIGHTER M.C. and the stylized mark were likely to cause confusion with their U.S. Service Mark Registration No. 2,767,500 for the highly stylized mark “Renegade Pigs”, essentially for the reason that all of the marks included the work “RENEGADE.”
As a brief summary of the history of these Opposition matters, the records at the USPTO show that the Renegade Pigs sent an initial letter to the Club asserting that the Renegade Pigs owned certain rights in the word “RENEGADE” alone. However, contrary thereto, during the proceedings the record established that in fact the Renegade Pigs, through its Attorneys, admitted that it never used the word RENEGADE alone, by itself, or separate from its mark involved in the Opposition proceedings. In addition, numerous third party uses of the word RENEGADE and trademark registration inclusive of the work RENEGADE were made of record in connection with motorcycles, motorcycle riding, motorcycle clubs and motorcycle paraphernalia, all of which go to establish the word RENEGADE is weak and can not serve as a trademark source designator for all such third parties. These factors, in combination with several other factors and evidence set forth in the record of the Opposition proceedings, and the fact that marks in their entireties must be compared against one another in a likelihood of confusion determination, all weigh in favor of a finding of no likelihood of confusion between the Club’s applied for marks and the Renegade Pigs service mark registration.
While the Club believed, and still believes to this day, that it would have prevailed in the Opposition matters, the costs of litigation was becoming a financial burden on the Club and its members. After several failed negotiations that would have allowed the Club to retain its name, the Club realized that no matter who prevailed in theses Oppositions proceedings the true losers in all of this were the charities and individuals that could have benefited from money being spent on litigation. While it was not an easy decision to make, in desiring to get back to its fundraising efforts for burn victims, CT Burn Camp for Children and various other charities and causes-in-need that the Club was founded on, the Club’s body of membership voted for “Abandoning” its applied for trademarks and changing the Club’s name. By “Abandoning” its trademark applications, the USPTO has no decided the merits of the Opposition proceedings not has it ruled that the record weighs in favor of the Renegade Pigs. Rather, the Club’s applications simply become withdrawn.
So out of the legal fire the Club is reborn as a stronger, more united and committed Club – the RAGING KNIGHTS FIREFIGHTER MOTORCYCLE CLUB (aka, RAGING KNIGHTS FIREFIGHTER M.C.). The RAGING KNIGHTS FIREFIGHER MOTORCYCLE CLUB is ready to ride as a brotherhood and continue with its fundraising efforts to get back to the reason the Club was founded – helping out communities, families, children, firefighters and their families.
Our membership looks forward to rising above the “RAGING” fires of hell and obstacles that were placed in front of it over the word RENEGADE!!!! The Club’s membership refuses to go away and is continuing to grow in both size and charter locations. The RAGING KNIGHTS FIREFIGHTER MOTORCYCLE CLUB would like to THANK all of our supporters for standing by us.

The Raging Knights Firefighter MC is an independent firefighter motorcycle club with chapters organizing across Connecticut. We are a law abiding motorcycle club. We support those that support us. The RKFFMC attends multiple biker events, rally's, fundraisers, both in Connecticut and as far west as South Dakota and as far south as Mrytle Beach. As with most clubs rumors tend to swirl around in the wind that aren't true. For this reason, we ask that you not judge us on rumors, but come to one of our events and get to know us.
We are an all male firefighter motorcycle club. However, we would like to mention our wife's, girlfriends and significant others who have been our main supporters since the beginning. All of our members appreciate all their help and efforts for all that they do during our events through out the year. While the girls do not wear colors, they do have their own apparel with their own design and are known as the "Fire Ho's".
Thank you to all for your continuous support of the Raging Knights Firefighter MC and attending other charities with us as our guest.
